Leading the Way: STOREX Sunbury Shortlisted for FEDESSA Sustainability Award 2025
STOREX has been named a finalist for the FEDESSA Sustainability Award 2025 for our pioneering work at STOREX Sunbury – a project that shows sustainable commercial construction can reduce carbon emissions at scale.
Here’s all the info on our entry into the awards.
A Landmark Low-Carbon Project
STOREX Sunbury is the first UK site to use Cemvision’s ultra-low carbon cement on a live construction project.
Made from industrial waste and requiring no kiln, Cemvision’s Re-Ment Massive mix cuts 80-100% of CO₂ emissions compared to traditional concrete.
The concrete slab at Sunbury was poured using existing construction methods, so the process remained familiar for contractors, yet delivered carbon savings and performance above industry standards.
Numbers That Matter
The project achieved a 73% reduction in cradle-to-gate carbon emissions, measuring just 70.35 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per cubic meter compared with 263 kilograms per cubic metre for standard concrete.
The Cemvision mix exceeded all compressive strength requirements and demonstrated low shrinkage, high chloride resistance and overall durability in line with BSI Flex 350 standards. This means that the Cemvision mix performed better than required and met all the UK building standards.
How We Made It Work
Introducing a new material on a live construction site required careful coordination and rigorous testing. The team developed specifications and testing criteria in collaboration with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and the Mineral Products Association.
A controlled laboratory environment was established to prevent any cross-contamination with standard cement, ensuring the integrity of the mix.
To minimise risk, a ground-bearing slab was selected and poured using traditional construction methods.
This approach demonstrated that low-carbon materials can be seamlessly integrated into real-world construction while maintaining both technical performance and safety standards.
Sustainability in Action
Sunbury now serves as a live demonstration of climate leadership, showing how commercial projects can adopt low-carbon practices.
Concrete is a major contributor to embodied carbon. By addressing it head-on, STOREX demonstrates that sustainable construction can deliver both environmental and business value, improving ESG credentials while reducing future carbon liabilities.
A Greener Future
The success of STOREX Sunbury shows that ultra-low carbon alternatives perform at or above industry standards. This pilot provides a blueprint for replicable, low-carbon rollouts across our future sites.
Through environmental impact, technical innovation and practical value, STOREX Sunbury reflects exactly what the FEDESSA Sustainability Award celebrates.
The winners will be revealed at the FEDESSA Awards Dinner on 2 October 2025 in Dublin.
